Celebrate Any Occasion with University City Flower Delivery from Ode à la Rose

University City gets its reputation as the bustling heart of West Philadelphia as well as its name from being home to two of the city’s largest and most influential institutions: Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. These collegiate giants offer multiple disciplines and are anchored by nationally-renowned medical hubs, giving this enclave its well-deserved status as the academic epicenter of the whole region. This neighborhood also boasts an unshakable commitment to cultural and artistic exploration fueled by modern innovation and a magnetic individuality.

Getting Around University City

All who visit the busy sidewalks of U-City discover a fascinating palette of people and places – everything from award-winning, chef-run establishments and a vibrant street-food scene to intimate late-night hangs and high-end art galleries. A large and diverse student population sprawling in all directions beyond University City’s borders contributes to the energy and verve of the everyday in this unique neighborhood. However, there’s something here for everyone, whether they’re toting a backpack or not.

This neighborhood is bordered to the south by University Avenue, to the north by Market Street, and to the east and west by 30th and 38th streets. You can access U-City via a short walk across the pedestrian-friendly South Street Bridge. Or, hop SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line to travel east or west along Market Street, one of the densest corridors in the neighborhood. You can also make stops along 38th, 40th, and other prominent north-south swathes.

Things to Do in University City

There’s no shortage of things to do in this area for the people who live here or pass through. Fans of cinema can take in the annual BlackStar Film Festival, a four-day festival celebrating black people, traditions, and arts by showcasing a variety of films from a global repertoire of people of color. If you’re a music lover, check out the 40th Street Summer Series, a free monthly concert series one Saturday per month throughout the summer. Or, visit the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts to take in one of many cultural performances including world music, jazz, touring theater, and works by local Philly artists.

The Penn Relays is the world’s oldest relay meet and takes place each year at the University of Pennsylvania. Up to 100,000 spectators make it to this much-anticipated event every spring. Or, take a friend along to one of the area’s many tempting eateries to enjoy some great local fare or ethnic cuisine. Don’t overlook Federal Donuts, where you can get fried chicken, coffee, and, of course, delectable donuts.
