Stamford Connecticut is about 30 miles north of Manhattan but is considered part of the Great New York area. The city is in Fairfield County and is home to four Fortune 500 companies. The large portions of the city are on the waterfront of Long Island Sound a tidal estuary of the Atlantic Ocean and there are a number of public beach areas.
Cummings Park and Cove Island Park are two of the bigger recreational spaces that include beach front. Stamford also has a private yacht club.
“Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens is a 91-acre (370,000 m2) botanical gardens and science education center boasting over 850 specimen trees and plants from around the world. It is also home to several Champion Trees; the largest of their species within Connecticut,” Wikipedia notes.
The gardens are well known for their exotic flora and special displays of season flowers and plants. The Mehlquist Rhododendron Collection covers over an acre of land dedicated to the flower. Rhododendrons and azaleas are all part of the same genus and though once thought separate, they are now seen as part of the Ericaceae, or blueberry family.
The Stamford Museum is also outstanding. There are Gutzon Borglum sculptures, though not quite as big as his well known work - Mount Rushmore.
