Send flowers to Jersey City, NJ
Jersey City, New Jersey, is a well recognized name - as the second largest city in the state (behind Newark) and the seat of Hudson county. Its proximity to New York City folds it in to the great NYC area, with many of its residents part of the huge daily commute in to Manhattan. Its large waterfront is also part of the city's importance for incoming trade and its role as a transportation hub.
Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe, Jersey City was surveyed by Henry Hudson though the Dutch West India Company developed the area in the 1600s. The city has an extensive history - from the early settlements and its incorporation in 1820 to its involvement with the Underground Railroad during the slave days. As a dock and a manufacturing town, it also played essential roles during the First and Second World Wars.
Mayor Frank Hague controlled the city for 30 years - 1917 to 1947, and the corruption was legendary. The mayor who made just under $9,000 a year lived like he was a millionaire with lavish residents all over the tri-state area. After the Second World War the prosperity of Jersey City declined and urban plight saw the affluent members of its community leave.
Flowers Bloom As City Grows
However, there was a re-emergence of the city in the 1980s and it was modernized and parks were built and flora blossomed. This growth of native plants and flowers in Jersey City mirrored the growth of the city. the Flowering Dogwood - the tree's white flowers are popular to native wildlife, Maples - Red, Sugar and Silver - are prevalent in the city, while other Dogwoods add to the floral colors during the various seasons. Marigolds and Coneflowers with their large daisy-like flowers add to the city's colors, as do other lesser known flowers like Fringed Bleeding Heart, Goat's Beard and Jack-in-the-Pulpit.
The city also hosts the Colgate Clock - the Colgate-Palmolive company claims it is the largest clock in the world, but either way it can be seen across the Hudson River at Battery Park in New York City. Jersey City also has 12 sister cities from all over the world - South America, Europe and Asia.
