Retailing was revolutionized here by John Wanamaker, the “King of Merchants,” when he opened his giant department store at 13th and Chestnut. This store was the very first to use electric lights – thus enabling locals to shop after dark. Just to the north, John B. Stetson began the most famous hat company in the US, blending function and fashion in hats that were sold throughout the world. After many years of decline, Midtown Village has spent the last 15 years or so coming back to life with renewed vitality. This neighborhood prides itself on being a unique enclave of independently-owned and open-minded restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and more.
